Two students learning pottery wheel techniques at Pearl City Clay House, Jamestown, NY

Wheel Classes

Find Your Center at the Wheel

There’s something meditative and grounding about working at the pottery wheel—the rhythm of the spin, the cool texture of clay, and the satisfaction of creating something entirely by hand. At Pearl City Clay House, our wheel classes welcome both beginners and returning potters who want to keep their hands in the clay.

In each session, you’ll learn essential wheel-throwing techniques; from centering and shaping to trimming, decorating, and glazing. Whether you’re taking your very first spin or developing your personal style, our instructors will guide you step by step in a supportive, creative environment.

What to Expect

  • All materials and firing are included in your class fee—just bring your curiosity and creativity.

  • Small class sizes ensure plenty of personalized attention and instructor guidance.

  • Aprons are provided, but dress to get a little muddy—it’s part of the fun!

We offer a variety of wheel experiences throughout the year to fit your comfort level and schedule:

  • Wheel Try-It – a fun, hands-on experience for anyone curious about working on the pottery wheel. You’ll learn the basic process of throwing clay, but this single-session class focuses on the experience itself—there’s no take-home finished piece.

  • Wheel Taster – a one-time introduction that gives you a feel for centering, shaping, and trimming clay on the wheel. You’ll create a small piece that we’ll glaze and fire for you to pick up later.

  • Wheel Skills – designed for students who already have basic wheel experience and want to refine their technique, improve consistency, and explore new forms.

  • Wheel Roots – a multi-week beginner series that builds your foundation in wheel throwing and glazing. Learn techniques you can build on in future classes.

  • Wheel Shoots & Blooms – our advanced wheel series for students ready to take their pottery to the next level with complex forms and surface decoration.

Whether you’re spinning your very first bowl or working toward a full set of handmade mugs, our pottery wheel studio is a place to relax, experiment, and enjoy the creative process.
