blackout meditation workshop

Start the new year with a new skill!

Join me, Deb Eck, program director and resident teaching artist, as I gently guide you through the relaxing art of blackout meditation. What is that? It’s an art form I invented many decades ago, a mash up of blackout poetry, doodling and occasionally some drawing & coloring.

This session will cover the how-to-get-started basics, along with a few different techniques you can use to take your blackouts to the next level. Absolutely NO prior art experience needed!

Before the class you will need to assemble a few simple supplies:

A pencil and eraser,

a book you are willing to use to write on/in,

a sharpie or two (I use an ultra fine point and a regular fat sharpie most of the time)

In addition its nice to have – but not essential –

a white gel pen – Posca pens, unibazl or jellyroll pens are all great choices

some colored pencils and/or markers

a small set of alphabet stamps & an ink pad

Stencils that fit the size of your book (or smaller)

Stellar string (stars)

On the ninth day at the Clay House my true love gave to me 9 stellar strings, 8 fluffy Frosties, 7 folded flurries, 6 wooly wreaths, 5 button baubles! 4 nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers, and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree!

Be warned this is a sloppy, sticky craft! But once you have mastered the basic idea you can turn it into many different forms. If DIY crafting makes you nervous, never fear! Deb can guide you through the process step by step for a polished final result.

A materials list will be sent to all registered participants before the event.

nordic star

On the fourth day at the Clay House my true love gave to me 4 nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree!

This Swedish advent star is traditionally made of paper or wood, and hangs in the window to bring light to the darkest season of the year, and in memory of the star followed by the wise men. Join Deb in this community class using recycled materials to make a settee light your holidays.

folded flurry

On the seventh day at the Clay House my true love gave to me 7 folded flurries, 6 wooly wreaths, 5 button baubles! 4 nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree!

These elegant snowflakes are made from folded paper. To be fair, they are a little tricky but their prettiness makes up for that in the end. Why not join Deb to test your patience and dexterity, and make a whole flurry of your own?

A supply list will be emailed to all registered participants before the night of the class.

wooly wreaths

On the sixth day at the Clay House my true love gave to me, 6 wooly wreaths, 5 button baubles! 4 Nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree!

These charming little wreaths use odds and ends you can easily find around the house, or scrounge up amongst your friends and family. Our example use super fluffy chenille style yarn, which hides a multitude of sins, and makes for an elegant finished product.

There’s an optional kit available in our online shop or a complete materials list will be emailed to students.

Button Bauble

On the fifth day at the Clay House my true love gave to me, 5 button baubles! 4 Nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree!

Inspired by Victorian pomanders, this modern take uses buttons and pearl headed pins, along with some ribbon and a few beads. Pick colors to match your holiday decor, or go with a more traditional red and green.

This class has a kit which is available in our online shop or you can assemble your own from the materials list which will be emailed to you after registration.

fluffy frosties

On the eighth day at the Clay House my true love gave to me, 8 fluffy Frosties, 7 folded flurries, 6 wooly wreaths, 5 button baubles! 4 nordic stars, 3 sparkling snowflakes, 2 festive flowers and a sleepy sloth for my holiday tree.

Felting occurs when wool fibers are agitated together with a special felting needle. This is a very easy entry level felting project that can be customized to give your frosty the snowman their own personality.

We’ve put together an optional kit for the class with all the materials and tools you will need. You can find it in our online shop here. Students will also receive an email with a full list of supplies.
